Assignment #3--Photography

Hi class,

Below are my candidates for the photography assignment. All of the photographs were taken on a 2004 model Sony digital camera that I own. The specifications on it read that it has 7.2 megapixels and a 1,000 ISO-level. I chose the categories of street photography, landscape/nature photography, and abstract photography for my pictures. In taking the photographs and making simple alterations to perspective, focus, etc. the distinctions between pictures that could be construed as abstract and pictures that could be construed as landscape-nature or street photographs were especially negligible, and I hope some of my candidates reflect the ambiguity between these categories.

 Abstract Photo #1

I honestly don't remember taking this photograph, I'm fairly certain it was snapped as I was either putting the camera into or taking it out of my jacket pocket, I think I'm most intrigued by the  blurring effect on the objects in this photography however and how it seems to capture motion from an unorthodox angle.

Abstract Photo #2
This was actually a photo of what appeared to be some discarded particle board that had been placed in an overflowing dumpster. I really like the sharp angles of the different shapes and how they seem to almost fit together geometrically. The background shading of the white graffiti makes the white in the particle board stand out even more.

Abstract Photo #3
This photo could obviously considered a street photograph if rotated to it's proper angle but I think it works well as an abstract photo when you consider the linear aspects of the photo. I also really like the weird sense of perspective that's given from the platform.

Abstract Photo #4
Not much abstraction in this photo, it is exactly what it appears like, but I really like the view of the bananas from the hole set up by the green crate.

Abstract Photo #5
These are the gear parts of a motorcycle that I saw on the street, taken from a close-up angle. It's another instance of the shapes playing off of each other which I thought was really interesting.

Landscape/Nature Photo #1
This was a photograph of a community garden near my apartment, taken from an elevated vantage point.

Landscape/Nature Photograph #2
This is another photo that could could be considered ambiguous definition-wise, considering the light installation pictured here obviously wouldn't occur naturally. But I think it is very similar to an image of snow falling on a sunlit day, and that aspect of it being almost an illusion is very interesting to me.

Landscape/Nature Photo #3
Probably my favorite nature photograph, I actually placed the camera on the ground to get the a birds-eye perspective so to speak. I love how it is really not much different from two human subjects walking down the street.

Landscape/Nature Photo #4
Another picture of an animal subject, squirrels are incredibly fast-moving and hard to capture, so I was thankful to catch this furry creature in a stationary position.

Landscape/Nature Photo #5
A picture of a tree taken in Madison Square Park, the gnarled shapes of the trunks seem to create a really cool visual effect.

Street Photo #1
This is a photograph of a clinic for the mentally handicapped near my workplace. There are obviously ethical dimensions of a picture like this considering I was told by a staffer not long after taking the photo that I wasn't supposed to photograph them, although it was done from outside and not inside their facility.

Street Photo #2
I really enjoy the idea of picking street photos that convey the suggestion of people rather than including their actual presence, hence my selection of this photograph.

Street Photo #3
This photo is pretty straightforward, graffiti is a subject so easily associated with urban environments, and the fact that it's on an innocuous electricity cart makes it all the more interesting.

Street Photo #4
Another person-less street photo, the color contrasts of the different fruits is incredibly striking.

Street Photo #5
The last person-less street photo candidate, the mixture of lighting and perspective in this subway give a real clear definition of space that I found interesting.
